-Must have 2+ years of experience designing web and native mobile interfaces;
-Leading with fully responsive mobile-first interfaces;
-Outstanding and self-explanatory portfolio;
-Strong emphasis to user needs;
-A detailed eye for typography, color usage, layout and motion throughout every feature that is designed;

Dear friends! On October 12-13, GDG DevFest Ukraine 2018 took place in the city of Lviv. Our company was a diamond sponsor of the event which gathered more than 1,000 engineers, managers and entrepreneurs. The focus of this conference was the latest news from the world of Android, Web and Cloud.

 

 

During the 2 days of the conference there were 42 sessions of experience exchange and 6 workshops of practical knowledge! At GDG DevFest Ukraine technical experts from Google, Intel, Twitter, DeepMind, Twilio, Microsoft, Runtastic and Telerik delivered their speeches.

The advantages and disadvantages of open space

For the first time, the idea of an open-space office was implemented in a distant 1950 by the team from Hamburg. They believed that an office without walls would benefit communication between employees.

Today, almost 70% of companies work in open-plan offices. However, according to the survey, more than 40 000 employees from 300 different office buildings believe that open-space has a negative impact  on their effectiveness.

 

Having analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of working in offices without walls, we are ready to reveal our results.

 

The advantages of open space:

1. Financial savings.
It is more expensive to rent or buy a building with separate offices and to do a necessary repair in each of them than to arrange a single space. The absence of walls extends space to about 30%, which is an important thing for large corporations!

 

2. Simplicity in communication.
Freedom of movement and the absence of many offices which you have to pass in order to solve work issues. This greatly facilitates the process of communication between employees from different departments and colleagues.

 

3. Direct control.
Managers can easily control employees and contact with them without causing annoyance in a team.

 

The disadvantages of open space:

1. No confidentiality.
Phone conversations can be overheard by colleagues and some documents should not be kept on a table accessible to all colleagues.


2. Poor concentration.
The scientists from the University of Sydney have found out that about 50% of people working in offices without walls and almost 60% of workers sitting at separate tables are dissatisfied with the noise in a room. Only 16% of employees who work in a separate room suffer from similar problems.

 

3. Viruses.
Recently scientists in Denmark have found out that such a close "cohabitation" of desks negatively affects the health of employees who work in open space offices. They get sick 60% more often than the owners of separate rooms.

 

How to find a balance? 

1. Additional space.
It is worth to allocate several rooms to employees whose activities require constant concentration. For example, journalists, accountants, programmers, and sales team. A separate meeting and brainstorming room, as well as separate kitchen area, would also be needed.

 

2. Earplugs and headphones.
Employees will be able to use these devices to better focus on work and listen to their favourite music.

 

3. Personal boundaries.
Every employee should have at least a small personal space to place their belongings, a beautiful flower, photos of their loved ones, etc.

 

Conclusions
If you follow the above tips, working in an open space will be comfortable, and the atmosphere in the company will be friendly. Also, each employee can use their own little tricks to help them turn the disadvantages of working in an office without walls into advantages.
